The Favela's of Brazil-

You really don't get a taste of Brazil until you get to visit the Favela's. I visited both Helipolis in Sao Paolo, and Rocinha in Rio.  In Sao Paolo I got to visit the work of Apprendiz and other social projects involving the arts and community.  In Rocinha I got a very special night time tour with MC Junior and Leonardo-- who are giants in the music scene here.

I had an amazing time. People were lined up on the streets watching old videos of Michael Jackson.  The food was great.  Graff scene in Sao Paolo is sick!  Rio is a completely different vibe-- much more chill, typical of a beach community.  Rio is LA.  Sao Paolo is NYC. This video is a little long, but it's worth watching- especially for the music in the end.

Thanks so much for sharing that! I don't have the luxury of traveling the world so to be able to see a culture that would otherwise be unobtainable is hella cool.

That music was tight too. I couldn't understand what they were saying but hip hop is universal, so I know they said some slick shit. What a beautiful language.

Damn, so I, a brazilian, who visited hundred of different places of my own country, but never a favela from Rio or São Paulo never got the "real taste" of my country?

Nothing against the favelas, my city Recife has its share of poor communities, but Brazil is much more than São Paulo and Rio, the same way the USA are much more than LA and NYC.

Hey Vito, keep in mind: Marc is an US-American. Most of them do not travel at all (I heard only one 1 out of 10 has a passport at all).
And IF they travel overseas they do stuff like "Europe in one week". He already is extraordinary, but still he is one of them.

Hi Marc, I'm Andre, i have 19 years and recently decided to make t-shirts, the principle i have 4 models, and has studied and observed histories of success. Impossible not to find your history, spent the night seeing all your projects and works, and in 1 day, you won a big fan, not only by ECKO UNLTD which is very successful in Brazil, but throughout the creative process and expansion of MARC ENTERPRISES .
Now, in your blog, watching the video in Rio de Janeiro (my city), my admiration increased to see his curiosity and desire to know the Rocinha, which shows not only be a "businessman" but that "work" for pleasure.
Congratulations, and is always welcome.

Became a person who inspires me and admire, I hope one day be as successful and happy in my work as you, and maybe have my online store the 4 classic T-shirts from the beginning, as your six.

Congratulations for everything, again !

Mark,

I am very happy you came to visit my home of Rocinha.
I love Rocinha becase there is so many good things there. Favelas
are so much more than drugs and violence.

I run a art project and do social workto help improve my home of
Rocinha. Please check out my website about how I am helping to
empower my people of the favela!

Below is the song with the words, Junior e Leonardo was singing on
your video at the Trapia restarant in the Via Apia
area of Rocinha.

Sou favelaaaaa…eu fui…e sempre serei favela!!!!

Junior e Leonardo- Sou Favela!- Pra sempre favela

Sou favela
Eu fui
E sempre serei favela 2X

Tudo que a favela me ensinou,
Tudo que lá dentro eu aprendi,
Vou levar comigo a onde eu for,
Vou na humildade procurando ser feliz

Mesmo com tanta dificuldade
Tantos preconceitos que eu já sofri
Só quero cantar a liberdade
Esse é o trabalho do MC

Levar a voz das comunidades
Aonde o nosso Funk atingir
Pois o favelado de verdade
Vai ser favelado mesmo se sair dali.
Por isso…

Sou favela
Eu fui
E sempre serei favela 2X

Junior e Leonardo MCs

Sou favela
Eu fui
E sempre serei favela
