The artist Charles Lutz’s series Denial and Acceptance explores issues of authorship, originality, authenticity, as well as art commerce through the work of the most important artist of the 20th Century, Andy Warhol. Inspired by the recent turmoil created when The Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board rejected authenticity of an important Warhol Self-Portrait owned by film producer Joe Simon. The work had previously been deemed authentic by the late executor of Warhol's Estate Fred Hughes, before Simon purchased the piece. The work was submitted for review to the authentication board as requested by a possible buyer of Simon's painting. The new representatives of the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board decided that the work was not the work of Warhol and stamped DENIED on the reverse, and in that instant, a work worth 1.4 million dollars was made to be worthless. The Board has come under fire for unfair practices, creating an artificial scarcity of Warhol's work, in turn, inflating the value of the Warhol Estate's own catalog of works by the artist. In this series, Lutz takes this image, one of Warhol’s most iconic works, the 1964 Self Portrait with silver hair based on a photo-booth portrait, and recreates the work 12 times in 4 different hues, exact to the specifications of the originals and then submits them to the full authentication process of the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board, fully intending for the works to be formally stamped, cataloged, and DENIED by the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board. Citing statements such as, “There is no such thing as an authentic Warhol,” by Warhol's former studio manager Paul Morrissey and former painting assistant Ronnie Cutrone's point that, “Andy rarely got involved. He had an ability to let go and say ‘you do it’. It was easy to rip off his paintings and sign for them.” Lutz asks,"What does an "Authentic" Warhol look like?"

Hey Marc, you don't know me but I have been trying to get a hold of you for quite some time now, I have been to your office several times and my attempts of meeting you or setting up a meeting have been unsuccessful ( I mean who am I to speak to you, I know that you are a very important man). I left you a message on myspace in reference to my clothing line; I appreciate you answering back, suggesting that I should forward my designs to your design team at jobs @ ecko. Unfortunately, I decided not to because of the shadyness in any and every business ( for example: a guy named sal in charge of security down at your office made a little comment saying "don't give your designs to me I'll just run away with your idea" that is why I am so careful on whom I show my porfolio to [I know the potetial that my line it has to make it, I just need a back bone {you} to help me launch my project]).. I was hoping that if I could send my designs directly to you you would actually take my offer into consideration. The name of the line is H.N.I.C. Head Nation in Charge I got the name from Prodigy of Mobb Deep but the concept behind the line is representation of aspects, images and themes of different cultures world wide. I have a wonderful logo and am building a great portfolio; it's still in the works but I need help from professionals and maybe your design team could be of great help to my vision. I was hoping if you could send me your e-mail in order for me to send you what I have( I would I would greatly appreciate it). I know that I would be of great use to you and as vice versa. I've been dreaming of seeing my logo up on that wall of logos behind your receptionist desk. Hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely, Charles A. Batista
